exodus 20

we have hit the “Grape Nuts without Milk” section of Exodus, the giving of the law

the God who redeemed and is leading His people, now begins to teach them how to relate to Him

God’s law is demanding, heavy, and hard.

It is amazing in its precision and detail:

God Acceptable Sacred Anointing Oil Recipe

500 shekels of liquid myrrh

250 shekels of sweet-smelling cinnamon

250 shekels of aromatic cane

500 shekels of cassia

1 hin of olive oil

blended only by perfumers

Then Jesus comes not to get rid of the law, but to fulfill it

like Moses, Jesus goes on a Mountain and gives even more law in the Sermon on the Mount

Jesus says, “Yeah, not just murder, hate is also a sin. Not just adultery, but lust as well.”

human righteousness tends to begin and end with virtue, obedience, righteousness that is SEEN

Jesus says, “What you do externally AND what is going on inside you internally, all needs to be PERFECT”

Commandments and laws are demanding

You must be Perfect, in both WHAT you have done & will do

and in the WHY underneath what you have done & will do

the purpose of the law given to and taught by Moses

and the extended law given to and taught by Jesus

is to prove to you,

you cannot keep it

the law is not “10 Steps on How to Relate to God”

it is not a ladder at all

it is a wall you crash into

an impenetrable, impassable wall

until we crash into a wall, we will not ask for help

and not turn to the One who did everything for us.

“cheap grace” is not the problem of the free

“cheap grace” is the problem of the legalist who actually thinks they can attain righteousness

those free, have a way higher view of the demands of God’s law than

“cheap grace” is a problem for those in the bondage of self-righteousness who attempt to lower the law to clearable (clearable some of the time) hurdles

“No man knows how bad he is until he has tried very hard to be good.” CS Lewis
