Proverbs 29:5

“A man who flatters his neighbor
 spreads a net for his feet.”

Flattery:

Unnecessary praise.

Excessive compliments.

Modern day “love bombing”.

It can be dishonest and manipulative.

We are reminded how flattery “works”.

We are warned it is properly coupled with harm.

Flattery can be used to gain an advantage over someone or take advantage of them.

Thus, it can be “spreading a net under their feet”.

Sincere, honest, heaps of praise and verbalized encouragement is wonderful.

But be careful doing it and receiving it.

I’ve heard it said before:

Gossip is saying ABOUT others what you do not have the courage to say TO them.

Flatter is saying TO people what you NEVER say about them.

Walk wisely my friends.
