great Batman, elite Robin?

I am always fascinated with team building.

In another life I am some professional team’s General Manager.

Pairing elite talent is especially intriguing.

How is this going to work?

I read in the Harvard Business Review 20 years ago about “The Myth of Hiring Superstars”, or something like that.

The premise was there are no stand alone Superstars. That “Superstar” flourished in their past role given the team dynamic around them. In other words, if you are going to hire the Star, and expect them to “star” for you, you better hire their whole team.

When Jimmy Butler was traded to the Warriors it got my attention. How’s this going to work out? Jimmy has always had that dog in him and been among the best in the game, but he also has been a cancer in the locker room and sabatoged a team and organization multiple times.

Butler said this a few days ago when asked if the Warriors could win it all, “Yes, of course, I BELIEVE any team with me on it always has a chance, but, I KNOW any team with Steph on it always has a chance.”

Last night Jimmy looked unstoppable. Teams having to rightfully be most worried about Steph and that 3-point line left Jimmy with space and with that space he looked like the best NBA player in the league.

Maybe Jimmy is a great Batman but an ELITE Robin.

As Batman, he may be really good, yet sour and spoil a team.

As Robin, he may be the best player in the league.

As you emerge from your 20’s and 30’s one of the greatest gifts life gives you is a better knowledge of you. What you love, hate, are good at, not so good at, etc.

I believe we are all elite at something. Maybe your genius has yet to be discovered and unleashed because of your current team and situation.

It takes courage to not let expectations placed on you, keep you from operating in your strengths.

It takes courage to discover and “own”, “I’m really good at ________ when this also demands I’m also terrible at _______.

It takes wisdom and resilience to find the right team and fit.

It takes faith to walk away from the security, comfort, and paychecks of a known situation to pursue (or create?) a situation that allows you to play to your strengths most of the time.

But the payoff could be way more happiness, brilliance, and high levels of ROE, return on effort.

A strength is something when activated and completed, leaves you feeling STRONG.

A weakness is something when activated and completed, leaves you feeling weak.

God has designed you perfectly. Keep discovering that design and operate out of it more and more and more to the Glory of God and the good of others.
