command ten | Covet
exodus 20
Reminder, THE LAW does not reward progress, it wants exactness.
THE LAW is not, try to do better, it is YOU MUST BE PERFECT.
After nine commandments, we learn that we are all Idolatry ridden, idol worshipping, name in vaining, sabbath breaking, dishonoring, mass murderers, serial adulterers, five finger discounters, lying, (in my best Ric Flair)
We end with Do Not Covet.
Coveting is rooted in and begins with discontentment.
It leads us to wanting what we do not have or
wanting what someone else has.
I wish I had their wisdom, insight, waistline, speaking ability, job, house, spouse, income, hairline, athletic ability, pet possum, etc.
Social Media serves as a 100X amplifier.
The truth is, in Christ, God has already given us all we will ever truly need.
Paul spit out the below to the Church in Ephesus. In the original language, it was all one sentence that puts even Ric Flair to shame.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.”
Contentment and no longer coveting begins to happen when the excessive resources of the gospel smash and obliterage any need for myself beyond whatever has already been provided to me by Jesus.
Walker Pearcy describes humanity as “waiting for news”.
I’ve got great news. Jesus did not covet. Jesus went 10 for 10. Jesus was perfect for us.
The battle cry of those in Christ is not “I did it, I am doing it, I will do it! Look at me!”
The battle cry of those in Christ is “I could never do it, Jesus did it! Look at Him!”
Thank you, Jesus!
One day we can tell Him face to face.
Grindforth!…unimpressed with your lame works, grateful for Jesus’ perfect work.
